CYP5023 - Research Methods and Evidence Based Practice

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Students will explore a series of research methods, including their key features, their usefulness and application in relation to different contexts. Research methodologies will be critically examined, with an emphasis upon ethical research conduct. Content defined as:

Knowledge of a range of research methodologies, including their key features, and their appliance in subject specific disciplines.

• Evaluate the potential usefulness of various research methodologies for exploring specific research questions, research problems and research designs.
• Understand and reflect on ethical issues relating to children, families, communities and professional settings.
• Understand the basic process of designing, conducting and writing up research.
• Understand the relationship between research, policy and practice.

The relationship between research, policy and practice will also be considered and the impact that research can have. At the end of the module, students will gain an understanding of the research process and the limitations of research itself.

Further details relating to assessment
The research proposal and task test students’ abilities to design, justify and plan out a coherent research project. They must design realistic aims and objectives; critically justify the methodological approach and selection of methods, weighing up strengths and weaknesses. Formative assessment will be integrated into sessions. Further details will be included in the Module Handbook.
