CYP4033 - Introduction to Social Policy and Work With Families

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The module firstly outlines the perspectives on childhood that have shaped UK social policy. Highlighting key trends and legislation, it then explains the nature of the changing relationship between the state, parents/carers and children. The impact of social policy in particular contexts, such as children in care and youth justice, is discussed.

The second half of the module explores socially constructed concepts of childhood and the foundations of contemporary work with children and families. The importance of a systematic and values based approach is stressed. Students will develop their appreciation of effective assessment and planning

Further details relating to assessment
Early assessment - face to face and e-tutorial support will be provided to offer students feedback on a partial draft being developed for submission of the essay in assessment block 1, which will include references to approaches relating to children, young people and families.

Formative assessment – by self and peers will be integrated into sessions.

Portfolio of evidence will include identification of challenge for families plus appropriate professional responses. Opportunity will be provided for students to receive formative feedback on their assessment of difficulties for families. Further information will be provided in the Module Handbook.
