On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Appraise the effectiveness of a range of people management and leadership models, including those dealing with setting up teams.
Recognise the role of the personnel and HRM specialists in public and private organisations.
Demonstrate the ability of working within a team and reflecting on their personal skills and areas for development.
This module introduces students to the key aspects of theoretical people management and leadership models and the application of these in practice in the business environment.
Class-based exercises involving people management skills will develop practical experience of team-working and individual reflection on personal performance and areas for development.
Students will study the role of people management and the development of human resources, competitive advantage through human resource / people management, and discuss case studies relating to contemporary issues in the workplace.
The module will be delivered via a series of weekly 3-hour teaching blocks, comprising whole-group interactive lecture and seminar covering fundamental theories and applications. Lectures and seminars will be supported by applied workshops, pre and post lesson activities.
The module will make use of current topical case studies and developing business and political trends, and so the nature of the topics and exercises will vary.
Students will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions/exercises to support their progress through the module material. Students will need to contribute their own knowledge, research and opinions to the classes.

This is a negotiated title assessment (part 1 requires students to write an essay, analysing and evaluating approaches to managing people in organisations, using theory and models studied in the module, which they may contextualise by using a chosen case study organisation; part 2 requires students to apply theory and models studied in the module to reflect on themselves in order to write a personal development plan to enhance their team working and people management knowledge, skills and abilities).
