On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Conduct a thorough and critical search of the literature relating to their chosen topic.
Analyse and evaluate the findings of crime and policing research relating to their specific topic.
Critique knowledge and understandings related their chosen topic.
Critically evaluate current and historical issues and debates relating to their chosen topic.
Produce a balanced, cogent and critical synthesis of relevant material.
The Special Subject will not entail the student conducting empirical research. Rather, the extended essay is intended to provide an opportunity for the student to write critically about a selected and approved area in considerably more depth than is possible in other assessed essays. This module provides the student with the opportunity to work independently in an area of their choice addressing a specific area of research relating to crime and policing supported by a specialised member of academic staff.
Students will be offered 4 hours of one to one supervision which will help guide the student's independent learning. In addition, students are afforded the opportunity to submit a draft essay for formative feedback.
