On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Appraise attitudes to ageing and policies and practices demonstrated in different societies and cultures, with particular attention to diversity and disability.
Demonstrate an understanding of the biology of ageing with particular reference to cardiovascular, brain and mobility impairments.
Critically examine factors affecting successful ageing, e.g. personality, roles and responsibilities, active leisure, exercise, nutrition, relationships and care.
Analyse research evaluating interventions which promote healthy ageing for healthy populations and those with age related disorders.
The module will adopt a critical approach to exploration of attitudes, policies and practices around ageing both nationally and internationally. Contemporary critiques and perspectives on ageing will be examined, including perspectives of ageing populations as an economic burden or an under-used resource. Policy and practical responses to ageing populations in modern societies will be evaluated, including debates around changes to statutory retirement age. Age-related disorders will be analysed, with a particular focus on dementias and brain and mobility impairments. Factors affecting and promoting successful ageing will be evaluated, and interventions both to promote successful ageing as well as to address age related disorders will be appraised.
This module is delivered online. The core module content will be delivered using asynchronous online tasks and activities. Student learning will be supported through completion of interactive forums and web- based individual and group tutorials. Formative feedback will be provided in forums and tutorials at timepoints which align with module delivery. Summative assessment will be completed at the mid- point and at the end of the module, with feedback provided for this work.

Component 1, Portfolio 1: You will be tasked to complete a two-part portfolio. The first part of the portfolio is a 1500-word essay to examine a key issue effecting this population (such as state pension ages). The second part of the portfolio is a poster analysis of how an older person has been impacted by the attitudes and concepts of ageing (this can draw on the issue discussed in the first part of the portfolio.
Component 2, Portfolio 2: You will be tasked to complete a two-part portfolio. The first part of the portfolio is a 1500-word analysis and critique of policy related to accommodate holistic concepts of ageing. The second part of the portfolio is a presentation of a plan of an intervention to improve an aspect of health for a specific population within the ageing community.
Students will be supported with the assessments in two 30-minute individual tutorials, one mid-semester and one end-of-semester.
