SHN7043 - Mental Health and Wellbeing in Contemporary Society

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate health data to identify the scope of mental health challenges across the life course from an international and national perspective.
Critically evaluate causal factors that contribute to mental health and illness including lifestyle, wider social determinants, and inequalities.
Critically appraise national and local mental health policy to evaluate its impact on improving mental health and wellbeing for a range of population groups.
Demonstrate knowledge of the contribution positive psychology and strengths-based approaches plays in our understanding of mental health and wellbeing.
Critically review the evidence base to examine the impact of positive psychology interventions for a range of mental health issues.

Content:

The module will examine mental health and wellbeing from an international and national perspective, including trends in mental ill-health, policy, interventions, challenges, and service provision. The evidence base of positive psychology and strengths-based approaches and their practical application within settings and for a range of mental health issues will be explored. Mental health for specific population groups will be examined, considering a range of causal factors including lifestyle and behaviour, the wider determinates of health and the impact of social inequalities, critically appraising policy responses to service provision. A life course approach will be taken examining issues of vulnerability, resilience, and recovery.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is delivered online. The core module content will be delivered using asynchronous online tasks and activities. Student learning will be supported through completion of interactive forums and web- based individual and group tutorials.Formative feedback will be provided in forums and tutorials at timepoints which align with module delivery. Summative assessment will be completed at the mid- point and at the end of the module, with feedback provided for this work.

Component 1: Report - students will identify a specific target group and will critically review the evidence base for initiatives to support mental health and wellbeing, taking account of positive psychology treatment-based initiatives.

Component 2: Literature Review - students will critically evaluate challenges of understanding and responding to mental ill-health for a specific target group, as well as a review of the evidence of causal factors contributing to mental health and illness and critically appraise policy responses to address need.

Students will be supported with the assessments in two 30-minute individual tutorials, one mid-semester and one end-of-semester.
