On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically appraise the theoretical underpinnings of applied practice that inform the development of therapeutic and rehabilitative interventions.
Design an appropriate functional progression programme adhering to the principles of exercise rehabilitation.
Evaluate the principles of effective exercise rehabilitation practices
Contrast approaches to rehabilitation practice showing critical consideration of the individual and the stage of rehabilitation.
This module takes a research informed approach to the application of exercise rehabilitation. Students will engage in research informed discussions relating to concepts of functional progression. This module will focus on the requirement to adopt an individualised approach to therapeutic rehabilitation practices concerning the upper and lower body extremities as well as all regions of the spine and the head. Practical sessions will be used to consolidate the underpinning theory and develop exercise instruction skills which would complement the functional progression programme.
Students will gain critical skills in the review of current effective treatments for individual and contextual differences. Practical skills pertaining to rehabilitative treatments will be demonstrated in practical sessions including a focus on the softer-skills associated with working with individuals in a professional manner. The module builds on the previous level 5 module in developing the ability to make evidence informed judgments while taking into consideration the context and application of different treatment approaches and following current industry specific ethical guidance in accordance with current relevant professional legislation.
Workshops will introduce the theoretical underpinnings of therapeutic practice and these will be built on in practical session focussing on the demonstration and practice of therapeutic exercises. The module will use Problem Based Learning (PBL) in the form of group based case studies completed in the workshops.

Further details relating to assessment
Coursework: Case study problem based assessment. Students will be presented with a scenario and are required to provide a research informed appraisal of the various approaches to practice pertinent to the given situation. Based on this initial evaluation students are required to synthesise and document an appropriate rehabilitation plan.
Formative Assessment: This will be integrated into formal sessions using a combination of questioning techniques and peer assessment.
