SHN6002 - Inclusive Physical Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically appraise theory relating to expertise and talent in sport and physical education.
Evaluate theory relating to Special Educational Needs and Disability.
Critique the application of inclusion theory in practice within physical education and sport.

Content:

Students will study the theories of expertise and talent in sport and physical education. They will draw upon previous knowledge and understanding of psychology, sociology and science in order to comprehend and evaluate the factors contributing to mastery. It is expected that these constructs can then be applied to every child not just the higher achievers. Additionally, the module focuses upon special educational needs in PE and sport and how pupils can be assisted in order to achieve their potential. A predominant focus within the module will therefore be differentiation and the relation between the learner, the teacher/coach, the task and the environment. Practical activities will enhance the learning experience including disability sport, gymnastics and dance.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will experience a variety of teaching and learning methods which include formal lectures. Additionally, there will be workshops which are more informal where learning can be more interactive, facilitating discussion and debate. Practical sessions will also be present where we apply theory in practice. Within the practical sessions for example the students will experience disability sport and relate this to theoretical frameworks.
