SHN5342 - Growth and Development of the Athlete

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Understand the psychological and physiological aspects of growth and development and interpret their implications to sport performance.
Apply and evaluate the use of talent identification and long-term athlete development in youth sport internationally.
Compare and contrast the training practices when working with athlete groups of different ages.
Identify key issues relating to work with youth populations and consider how such issues could influence coaching practice.

Content:

The module will take a multidisciplinary approach utilising disciplines of physiology, psychology, strength & conditioning and pedagogy to understand the developing young athlete. The module will explore the growth and development of young athletes and link this to exercise performance throughout childhood and adolescents before moving on to explore approaches to identify talented young athletes and how coaches can optimally develop these young athletes.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures will highlight key concepts and considerations relating to growth and development, whilst the seminar sessions will involve tasks applying these concepts to case studies and their own assessment. Seminars also support learning through discussion, supported further with online support forums, quizzes and reading activities.

Negotiated assessment: Students are to negotiate an assessment method in which they must produce a submission which outlines the rationale for talent identification and methods to support athlete development. Peer assessment loading factors will apply to the negotiated assessment component.

001 Essay; 1,000 words; mid-semester 1 30%
002 Negotiated assessment; 15mins or 3,000 words; end of semester 1 70%
