SHN4083 - Scientific Principles of Physical Education and Coaching

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The human body as a system of levers and how these work together to produce movement. The ways in which this movement can be accurately described using planes and axes of movement and anatomical movement descriptors. The structural form of the human body including the components of Musculo-skeletal form, the structures of the heart, cardiorespiratory system and circulatory system. The way in which this knowledge and understanding impacts upon the delivery of learning activities to specific groups of individuals with specific characteristics and/or needs. Using statistical techniques such as data screening, hypothesising, comparison of means and correlations. The design and implementation of programmes and lessons incorporating the appropriate biomechanical and anatomical understanding to the area of Track and Field Athletics, Gymnastics and other sporting activities.

Further details relating to assessment
There will be opportunities for formative assessment during the practical sessions where students will be able to gain experience of peer teaching and assessment. This will prepare them for the session plan presentation.

The in-class test will assess the pure science content of the module.

The case study will aim to help students apply the science knowledge and understanding to a real-world athlete situation. Students will be asked to apply their scientific knowledge to the teaching and learning of a particular skill or activity, with particular emphasis on how this knowledge will inform pedagogical decisions and techniques.

Students will gain experience of using SPSS software package throughout the sessions in the IT suite. The assessment will be an output from provided data sets using this software. It will be integrated across the SHN4073 Sociology and Psychology of Physical Education and Coaching module where students will cover introductory elements of qualitative research methods. Together these two assessments will provide an opportunity to develop research skills in both a quantitative and qualitative context.
