SHA6232 - Youth Sport and Health

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of the social and cultural factors affecting young people's participation in sport and physical activity.
Make a critical appraisal of a selection of initiatives from relevant government and non-governmental organisations related to sport and physical activity for children and young people in the U.K.
Explain and apply appropriate theoretical perspectives in analysis of sport and physical activity provision.
Appraise the health needs of young people and the influence of a range of agents and agencies on health behaviour.
Critically evaluate National Curriculum Physical Education Guidance and government-led health promotion initiatives.
Evaluate a range of health campaigns in areas such as substance use and misuse, sex education, family life education, safety, health-related exercise, food and nutrition.>br> Plan a health promotion project for young people.

Content:

Sport, health and exercise behaviours are influenced by many factors. For sport and physical activity, this module explores social and cultural factors influencing young people's participation in sport and physical activity. Government and non-government sport and physical activity initiatives focussed on children and young people in the U.K. The application of theoretical perspectives. The role of sport in promoting positive youth development. Sport and social exclusion.

In addition, this module will examine the range of factors that influence young people's health including the determinants of health from a macro, policy based perspective through to an individual psychology based perspective. Students will develop the knowledge and skills to be able to plan, deliver and critically evaluate an intervention that will improve one aspect of young people's health. The module will broaden knowledge beyond sports and physical activity to include health issues such as smoking, obesity, alcohol and drug use and misuse, mental health. Students also have the opportunity to choose a health issue outside of this range, and will demonstrate the ability to justify this focus within a political, social and personal framework. The module will also examine the nature of young people's health promotion in the school setting, critically examining the Healthy Schools Standard.

Learning and Teaching Information:

A variety of learning and teaching methods will be used including lectures, seminars, workshops and student presentations.

Seminars will build and deepen theoretical knowledge and practical application of this knowledge to real-life situations.
