On successful completion of the module, students will be able to;
Demonstrate critical knowledge of the defining characteristics and scope of individual differences with reference to historical and contemporary psychological research.
Critically describe, compare and contrast major theoretical approaches and explanations in each of the identified areas of psychology.
Demonstrate an understanding of the relative merits and shortcomings of the predominant methods of investigation employed within each area, utilising an awareness of the internationalisation of the discipline and displaying an awareness of emerging trends.
Demonstrate knowledge of the link between research and theory across a range of psychological domains, and critically evaluate application in the modern world.
The module covers contemporary advancements and historic foundations in personality; human and animal intelligence; historical perspectives in individual differences; human motivation; individuals’ differences in health and illness; personality disorders; irrational belief and emotion. Due care will be taken to emphasise the career areas in which knowledge of Individual Differences can be applied.
The module delivery will be based upon a combination of lecture-based teaching and use of the Leeds Trinity VLE. A wide range of materials will be provided on the VLE to support students as developing independent learners in a new discipline. It is assumed students will not have studied any psychology previously. The time allocated for guided self-managed learning activities will allow students to use a variety of library facilities, such as book chapters, online resources or journal articles. The module will be delivered through lectures and workshop activities, incorporating tasks and discussions, which will be integrated with the additional materials encountered by students in their self-managed activities as they embark on the journey towards becoming independent learners and career professionals.
