PSY6532 - Applied Counselling Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the modes and methods used for the delivery of therapeutic interventions;
Demonstrate critical understanding of the theoretical models underpinning the major new directions in Counselling Psychology;
Demonstrate critical understanding of the therapeutic efficacy of the major new directions in Counselling Psychology;
Demonstrate critical understanding of the contemporary social, political, pluralistic, cultural and international context of Counselling Psychology;
From a culturally specific perspective, analyse case studies and design therapeutic interventions with supporting evidence for its efficacy.

Content:

This module builds on the modules PSY4462 & PSY5362. It broadens and deepens understanding of the range of issues presented by the client. It considers the different modes and methods used in the delivery of counselling psychology, for example, integrative and eclectic, the stepped approach, time-limited therapy, guided self-help, group therapy, biblio-therapy and internet-therapy. Issues in using these modes and methods are raised and considered from a pluralistic, cultural and international perspective. The module and programme concludes with consideration of future issues and directions, for example, positive psychology, disadvantaged groups, Eastern philosophies and career directions. Assessments are set within client case studies, designed to explore the contemporary ethical, social, political, pluralistic, cultural and international context of counselling psychology.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module delivery will be focused on workshop activities, which follow brief lecture style introductions. Workshops will involve students working in groups and reporting back to the cohort. The VLE will be used to host a range of supporting materials for students, who will now be independent learners. Provision within the allocated lecture time will be made available to support students on a one-to-one basis.
