PSY5322 - Educational Psychology 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of key issues within Educational Psychology from both UK and international perspectives;
Demonstrate an understanding of different models and theories for learning;
Evaluate the degree to which different educational environments and philosophies foster and develop learning;
Demonstrate an understanding of where barriers to learning originate and the impact they have on access to education;
Demonstrate an understanding of the key issues in the educational assessment of children.

Content:

The role of psychology within a variety of educational contexts and its approach to a wide range of educational issues. The specific role of an educational psychologist and their impact on school systems. Models and theories of learning. The role of educational context and its influence on learning. The barriers to learning and access to education. Issues in educational assessment.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered on the basis of two 90-minute workshop sessions per week, which will incorporate mini-lectures, discussions, case study work and problem-solving activities. These sessions will be linked to additional materials which students will use in their self-managed activities and their engagement with the VLE. The emphasis throughout will be on active learning, experiential exercises and problem solving.
