POL5052 - Advanced Understanding of the Police Service

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
examine the professional requirements of the police service, the necessity for these and how these are upheld;
consider professional approaches to policing, including fairness, ethics and integrity;
analyse organisational culture and the impact that has on the service.

Content:

This module will compare the professional standards within the police service to similar professional organisations. It will allow for analysis of processes and procedures designed to reduce the possibility of malpractice and how independent bodies, such as the IPCC and HMICFRS hold the police to account.

Students will examine why people in positions of respect or authority may fail to comply with such policies or protocols and commit criminal offences, and then review how misconduct/ malpractice influences future professional policing. They will consider the impact of organisational justice on a constable and consider strategies for dealing with organisational culture. A review of the progress being made within the police service to improve professional standards will be conducted.

Students will also analyse theories and concepts linked to ethics and apply professional approaches to policing, demonstrating fairness, ethics and integrity.

Learning and Teaching Information:

It is anticipated 5 hours will be given to didactic inputs preferably to the whole cohort.

It is intended that the large cohort will then be split into smaller groups of students. This will allow for more discussion-orientated teaching, facilitation and reflection.

Students will be provided with resources and instructions as to their self-directed learning.

Further details relating to assessment
Students are required to give a 20-minute paired presentation on the subject of policing, integrity and ethics followed by a 10 minutes question and answer session with the tutor. Students have a study week (these are staggered over week 96 to week 100). They will be required to attend on the Friday of their study week and deliver the presentation.
