PED5752 - Becoming a Teaching Professional

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Examine and reflect on their own progression in regard to professional practice;
Evaluate approaches to more challenging aspects of professional practice, including assessment and differentiation;
Experience and evaluate learning in contexts outside of mainstream settings;
Identify relationships between theory and practice in order to communicate evaluations and experiences to others.

Content:

The module builds on reflective practice established in Level 4 with a focus on students developing their own professional practice. Students will reflect on key theories about the teaching and learning of children, including current national priority areas. Specific links to teachers’ professional standards will be made in areas of: learning behaviours, metacognition, differentiation, and assessment processes.

The module includes a placement from a range of settings outside mainstream classrooms. Students will be provided with opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding within a particular area of interest e.g. special school provision, museums education, outdoor learning, international learning and spiritual and cultural retreats.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures and workshop groups will include guest speakers from a variety of educational settings. A two-week placement will including keeping a Reflective Journal to be shared in sessions.

Students will meet in smaller tutorial groups to consider the links between the different objectives from the taught course, time management skills, progress towards targets set and their developing professional knowledge. Lectures illustrating professional practices will form part of the provision for this module, providing context for students' reflections and actions and for the setting of directed tasks.

Further details relating to assessment
The essay will be focused on one aspect of professional skills from the module. The group poster presentation and conference will incorporate the formative Reflective Journal from the two-week placement.

This module will develop students' understanding of aspects of professional practice in regard to evidencing the following Teachers' Standards (DfE, 2012):
