MFC5003 - Professional Development

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This is a professional skills module which will comprise placement instruction and advice, cv, interview, networking, self-marketing and industry specific employability skills which will add to and compliment the people and soft skills gained in Level 4. Utilising both external speakers, industry contacts and internal expertise (myFutures and careers), it will prepare students for their first external placement and fully equip them with the skills needed to succeed and impress employers, from first contact to the final working shift.

It will further develop teamworking, creative thinking and enterprise skills which were the foundation of the first year by introducing a year long student-led cohort-wide project. This module integrates with other modules from across the School to direct team teaching and integrated assessment. For example, the film being made by students in Script to Screen will be presented for this exhibition, and the marking is integrated. This also allows students to be in fewer groups and have fewer assessments and a more integrated Level 5 experience overall.

Further details relating to assessment
Assessment 1 will be an individual report where students wil research their chosen sector and identify possible placements and a potential career pathway, putting in place a rough plan to achieve that.

Assessment 2 is the year long project. Similar to the way the PLA works, this will involve staff guidance and expertise, but the theme and productions are very much student led/ working in small groups they will work to put on a collective multimedia exhibition. It is expected (but not required) that students will organise themselves into groups by programme. And each group will produce an exhibit in their subject area. It is expected that the Digtal Marketing students will form the exhibition team and run, market, organise and PR the event through professional and University channels.

Assessment 3 is the weekly work reflections with which students can critically reflect on their placement experience in direct contact with their personal tutor.

Early Assessment: there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks and this will help unpack the assignment details for the 1st assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.
