On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Understand and process information, at a basic level of Spanish, related to social, student and professional contexts;
Communicate, at a basic level of Spanish, information and needs related to social, student and professional life;
Show an awareness of key aspects of historic, cultural and social factors which have shaped contemporary life in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.
Students will learn: to use expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, local geography, student life and employment); to engage in simple and direct exchanges of information on familiar and routine matters; to describe in simple terms of aspects of personal background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need. A range of cultural and social topics will also be explored, including: Spain - the Transition from Dictatorship to Democracy, The Madrid movida, The New Cinema, The Spanish Civil War; Latin America - Postcolonial reality, modern Latin America, Art and Literature, Popular Culture.
Many of the sessions are geared toward language teaching, which will involve a mixture of lecturing, group activities, use of language videos and individual discussion. The cultural material will be taught through a variety of workshops and guided independent study.

Assessment 1 - Skills Audit: Speaking Skills, in the form of a presentation and conversation in Spanish.
Assessment 2 - Practical - Class Test covering Writing, Reading and Listening skills. Also a section on Cultural Social topic. 1 ½ hours long.
Because of its practical linguistic nature, the marking criteria for this module are non-standard. The marking criteria are fully set out in the Module Handbook.
