Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical frameworks for understanding and analysing second language acquisition.
Demonstrate knowledge of the different contexts for provision of the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, and the range of different needs of English Language learners.
Describe and critically evaluate a range of different concepts, curriculum design principles and teaching methods relevant to English Language teaching.
Find and evaluate appropriate resources for English Language teaching.

Content:

In this module, students build on their understanding of the structure and history of English, and of first language acquisition, to develop a practical understanding of how English is taught to and learned by speakers of other languages. In the first part of the module they will gain an overview of theoretical frameworks for understanding and researching second language acquisition, and also gain an understanding of how the teaching of English Language is organised, both in the UK and abroad, and its social and global contexts. In the second part of the module students will focus on practical questions of teaching methods, curriculum design, and navigating the wide range of resources available for English Language teaching.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The main form of teaching session will be the seminar, where concepts and skills will be introduced by the lecturer and learned through practical application - specific tasks, problem-solving, discussion and collaborative close reading of texts, with regular provision of formative feedback on those activities. There will be two two-hour seminars each week over two periods of three weeks with an interval for the first assessment. Additional resources and support for guided independent study will be provided via Moodle and through availability of weekly staff drop-in times for advice, clarification, discussion of assignment plans, etc.
