CYP7063 - Interrogating Diversity, Marginalisation and Oppression

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: Critically engage with the political, economic and social context within which oppression and discriminatory practice is created. Critically evaluate policy and provision and its role in combatting marginalisation and oppression. Investigate and critically appraise the effects of social and mass media upon children within a range of diverse societies.

Content:

This module aims to develop deep knowledge and understanding of diverse societies and the impact of marginalisation. Students will be supported to apply critical analysis to modes of oppressive practice within a range of social, cultural and economic situations, including:

- The daily lives of children and families within a range of diverse societies;
- The process of policy making within a range of political, economic and social contexts;
- Constructions of anti-oppressive practice from a range of cultural perspectives;
- The role of social and mass media and its complex effects upon societies, particularly with regard to the social and cognitive development of children and young people.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning on this module will develop skills and confidence in independent study by creating a network of support through lectures, seminars and a negotiated approach to learning and assessment. Students will be expected to undertake a wide range of personal reading to facilitate a varied menu of discussions and debates which will contribute to rolling self, peer and tutor assessment. Much of the reading will be self-sources with starter readings provided through Moodle.

The use of guest speakers will provide current research and practice evidence.

Teaching and learning will be differentiated to accommodate learners from diverse backgrounds and characteristics.
