CYP5122 - Curriculum and Assessment

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Explain the influence of politics and ideology upon the curriculum;
Evaluate the National Curriculum;
Distinguish models of curriculum planning, change, control, assessment and evaluation;
Differentiate between forms of assessment and evaluation, demonstrating ability to apply these.

Content:

This module examines the curriculum as contestable educational terrain. The legislation, policy and practice of the National Curriculum are examined within the context of competing models. Issues such as curriculum purposes, planning/development/change, control and accountability, student assessment, teacher appraisal and course evaluation are considered.

Students will be encouraged to apply knowledge and understanding by developing an assessment strategy which takes account of student assessment for learning and other purposes.

The module will take account of different education settings. It will focus upon compulsory schooling in its analysis of the National Curriculum but enable students to apply these concepts and knowledge to further/higher education also.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Some teaching will be student led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.
