CYP4025 - Health, Care and Wellbeing in the Early Years

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will require familiarity with the current Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the importance of health and safety in early years’ environments. The care of children from diverse backgrounds and their wellbeing will be addressed throughout the module. Studies will include:

• Welfare requirements/ratios
• Creating environments to support health, hygiene, wellbeing and development
• Development of policies
• Childcare routines e.g. feeding, sleep, bathroom and nappy changing procedures
• Risk Assessments
• Importance of record keeping
• Ethical practice
• Cultural values

Learning and Teaching Information:

Formal scheduled teaching and learning activities. This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Formative assessment by self and peers will be integrated into the sessions.

Guided independent study Students will be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

The Module Handbook will reflect changing policies and legislation and provide further details regarding the assessment, which will include preparing a written plan for an event or the development of a resource that references the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Formative and Early assessment will take place early to mid semester to help unpack the assessment details for the first assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation in line with the University grading system.

Assessment:

001 Plan for event; equivalent to 3,500 words; formative mid semester and summative end of semester 1 100%
