This module introduces students to the key aspects of theoretical management and leadership models and the application of these in practice. Students will gain an understanding of how people management is both the responsibility of general management and the functional role specialism of HR. Class-based exercises involving people management skills will develop practical experience of team-working and individual reflection on personal performance and areas for development.
Students will study the role of people management and the development of human resources, competitive advantage through human resource / people management, and discuss case studies relating to contemporary issues in the workplace.
The module will be delivered via a series of weekly 3-hour teaching blocks, comprising whole-group interactive lecture and seminar covering fundamental theories and applications. Lectures and seminars will be supported by in-depth applied workshops.
The module will make use of current topical case studies and developing business and political trends, and so the nature of the topics and exercises will vary. Students will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions/ exercises to support their progress through the module material. Students will need to contribute their own knowledge, research and opinions to the classes.

Group presentation:
Students will work in groups to present a case study of their choosing (the title of which must be agreed with the module leader). The case study should be topical and relate to the content of the module in particular the manner in which Human Resources Management may add value to the strategic direction of the business. Research will be required for this presentation, as will relation of the researched topics / companies back to the academic content of the module.
All students giving presentations will be expected to do so in front of their peers. While there will be no peer review marking included, the students will have the opportunity to offer feedback and question the rationale behind the Group Presentation. Marks will be allocated individually to students rather than a shared mark at the group level.
Individual report:
This is a negotiated title assessment that will require the students to compare company HR policies and procedures, and deliver a value judgement on their findings. The intention of the research element of this module is to support the ongoing preparation of the student for their level 6 Research Project.
Alternative assessment:
Any students who defer or re-sit any components of the assessment will be assessed by a written report with equivalent pro-rata loading.
