On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Describe and apply characteristics of professional practice
Explain the structure of the health and social care sector and it’s implications for practitioners
Explain the role of the law and codes of practice in health and social care
Outline and apply models of reflective practice
Understand and evaluate strategies for responding to issues of equality and diversity
This module seeks to explore the notion of becoming a professional practitioner in health and social care. In order to do this, it seeks to explore the contexts; social, political and organisational in which practitioners work and the implications that this has for their own development as practitioners. The notion of reflective practice as a tool for effective professional and personal development is also considered.
This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops

Further details relating to assessment
The assessments will be supported through a range of formative activities in the taught sessions during which students can receive informal feedback on their ideas in relation to both components. The essay will ask students to explore how practitioners might respond appropriately to one dimension of diversity (culture, disability, gender etc). Students will also reflect on a critical incident in relation to their own professional development and produce an action plan to support future development of professional characteristics during work placement.
