On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach in an assessment of a client to identify their physical activity and nutritional needs
Critically review research evidence pertaining to assessments of clients and exercise prescription
Design and deliver a personal training programme for a healthy client
Evaluate and reflect upon a personal training session and provided suitable adaptations for the session.
The module will cover a range of topics suitable to assess a client in order to obtain a full needs analysis. Content will include physiological, biomechanical, psychological and nutritional analysis to provide a detailed overview of the needs and goals of a client. Content will also cover novel training methods that could be applied to a personal training programme to allow the client to achieve their goals and lead to long term behaviour change. The module will also covered current guidelines for exercise prescription, practical skills required for personal training and effective planning techniques to engage client's in long term behaviour changes.
Learning and teaching methods will take the form of weekly 2-hour lectures and 2-hour workshop /practical fitness sessions. Assessment will be an individual viva and practical assessment. Through workshops, students will develop an understanding pertaining to exercise prescription as well as review evidence on exercise prescription. Later in the module, students will learn how to develop and design a personal training programme. Students will design and lead a personal training session in the practical assessment.

Further details relating to assessment
Learning outcomes 1 and 3 will be assessed through a practical assessment and supporting documents of a personal training session. Learning outcomes 2 and 4 will be assessed through a viva exploring a range of topics relevant to the session that was delivered.
Formative assessment will take place throughout the module.
Any student taking all these assessments as a deferred opportunity or re-sit will be assessed by a 4,000 word portfolio with 100% weighting
Other details relating to Assessment
- The practical component of the module is taught by REPS accredited staff.
- Sport lab, gym, sports hall and fitness suite are available for the practical / workshop component of the module.
- The practical assessment is 30 minutes per student in relation to REPS accreditation.
- An additional multiple choice exam forms part of the assessment for the module and is not a credit bearing component but is required for the REPS Level 3 accreditation (Personal Trainer). This exam will be offered during the normal assessment period, with any resit of this component being offered alongside subsequent exams for this module. Note that this may be in the following academic year.
- An additional worksheet pack consisting of 4 worksheets forms part of the assessment for the module and is not a credit baring component but is required for the REPS Level 3 accreditation (Personal Trainer). These worksheets will be offered during the normal assessment period for the module, with any resits of this component being offered alongside subsequent assessments for this module. Note that this may be in the following academic year. These worksheets will be set as homework following the relevant taught sessions.
- REPS Level 3 accreditation (Personal Trainer) will be achieved following successful achievement of both the multiple choice exam, completition of the worksheets and the practical assessment.
