On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate awareness of the management of injury throughout the healing process
Describe the therapeutic impact and effectiveness of injury treatment modalities
Discuss the role of prophylactic equipment in the management of sport injury
Demonstrate an awareness of the contraindications for the application of therapeutic techniques
This module will provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of injury treatment and management. Introducing pre-hospital care procedures in the management of sport injury, the module will explore the physiological responses to injury, the causes of pain and the healing process of different tissue types. A selection of therapeutic modalities will be examined. These will typically include: Cryotherapy, Hydrotherapy, Heat and Pharmacological Interventions.
In each case the students will be guided through the principles of usage, evidence base for therapeutic effects and contraindications. In addition, this module will allow students to explore the role of taping, bracing and other protective equipment in the prevention and management of sport injury.
Lectures will provide the theoretical basis for a range of topics. Workshops will afford time for student presentations, formative assessment and assorted learning tasks. Practical sessions will give students the opportunity to gain valuable skills and demonstrate competency in the use of the various modalities.

Further details relating to assessment
*N.B. BASRaT Accreditation stipulates that all practical components of the programme must be passed.
Examination: A 1 hour examination will appraise the student's knowledge of the associated theoretical concepts related to injury and injury treatment.
Oral examination/Practical Assessment: This assessment will afford students the opportunity to demonstrate the practical skills developed over the course of the module. Questioning will be used throughout to further appraise the student's knowledge and understanding. In order to obtain a pass in the practical, safe and effective practice must be observed; details on this are outlined in the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation NP3.
Formative Assessment: This will be integrated into practical sessions using a combination of questioning, demonstration of techniques and peer assessment.
