On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically appraise contemporary sport psychology research, identifying areas suitable for further study.
Identify research trends in sport psychology.
Collect and analyse data pertaining to sport psychology topic areas.
Identify implications of sport psychology research for practice.
This module aims to show how research-based evidence can be applied in practical situations. This module places an emphasis on the application of sport psychology within a team setting and will look to explore contemporary research findings to challenge student perceptions of what sport psychology is and, importantly, what applied practice entails. In doing so, the module will build on students' developing research skills to ensure that they are well positioned for this module and also for other areas of study.
Theoretical concepts are introduced in lectures, along with corresponding interactive activities within session.
Workshops focus on use of appropriate research approaches and ongoing assessment support, to help facilitate students' progress with their group-based research projects. They also provide an opportunity for presentations of project work to date for formative feedback (including peer feedback).

Further details relating to assessment
Practical (project proposal) - Students will be expected to provide a short presentation outlining the rationale and methodological considerations associated with their research project. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of relevant theory, contemporary research practices and the potential application of research to sport.
Practical (Poster Presentation) - Students will be expected to deliver a poster presentation which documents a mini project investigating a contemporary theme within sport psychology. In small groups, students create a conference poster and provide a presentation which includes questioning from the audience as part of an academic conference. Students will be expected to demonstrate ability in research skills, analysis of data as well as justify the application of the findings to further the sport psychology discipline.
NB. All student projects for this module are assessed by the module teaching team in relation not only to the corresponding marking criteria, but also the ethical considerations associated with the research. Modular ethical approval was obtained in 2018/19 for a period of 5 years, and in accordance with this, all student projects are required to map onto existing approved research parameters.
