On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Complete and maintain accurate client records for soft tissue treatments
Demonstrate awareness of relevant health and safety, professional and legal requirements for soft tissue treatments
Describe contraindications for soft tissue techniques
Demonstrate knowledge and skills of a variety of soft tissue techniques
This module will introduce the students to a range of sport massage and soft tissue techniques and enable them to apply these techniques in a safe and effective manner. Through the application of an understanding of human anatomy, students will learn appropriate sport massage sequences and techniques for the trunk, upper and lower limbs. Differentiation between pre- and post-sport massage will be explored. Central to this module is the development of students' awareness of safe practice in soft tissue techniques. Through an exploration of health and safety, client handling and professional ethics it will assist them in the development of practitioner skills. This module will also consider professional bodies related to the use of soft tissue techniques (GCMT, SMA, CNHC).
This module will have an emphasis on teaching in a practical setting. Lectures will provide the theoretical basis for the development of practical skills in soft tissue techniques. Practical sessions, which will make up the majority of contact time and are intended to give students the opportunity to gain valuable skills in the use of soft tissue techniques.

Further details relating to assessment
*N.B. BASRaT Accreditation stipulates that all practical components of the programme must be passed.
Directed activities: These consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark. This will typically require students to complete a series of tasks relating to record keeping, health and safety, contraindications and massage techniques.
Practical assessment: Students will be required to demonstrate competence in the various soft tissue techniques. In order to obtain a pass in the practical, safe and effective practice must be observed; details on this are outlined in the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation NP3.
Formative Assessment: This will be integrated into practical sessions using a combination of questioning techniques and peer assessment of soft tissue techniques.
