SHA4442 - Physical Education 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Appraise the aims of Physical Education and the role of the teacher in the delivery of High Quality Provision.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of skill acquisition and information processing within physical education and recognise their importance to the learner and teacher.
Apply safe, progressive learning principles, identifying clear objectives and outcomes, differentiation and teaching points to planning and delivery.
Explain and apply biomechanical principles to designing relevant learning experiences.

Content:

This module will develop understanding of Physical Education as a curriculum subject in schools and will consider its aims and desired outcomes. Consideration will be given to how our current situation regarding the curriculum has developed since the advent of the National Curriculum. The role of the teacher will be investigated with regard to teaching standards and their responsibilities evaluated with regard to High Quality Physical Education provision. The focus for the practical aspect of this module will be Athletics and outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA). Learning will be developed and applied to these activities, focussing on effective pedagogy as well as safe and effective organisation of the learning environment. The module will also develop understanding and application of theories relating to learning and skill acquisition. The impact of growth and motor development on the acquisition of skill will be evaluated in relation to developing fundamental motor skills and physical literacy. Modes of presenting practices will be evaluated in relation to the skill being taught and the learners skill level. The relationship between sensory input, perception, memory and decision making will be evaluated in relation to performance and tactical understanding. The application of biomechanical principles in the understanding, teaching and learning of skills and techniques will be developed within workshops and practical activities.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching methods will include lectures, workshops and practical sessions. The integration of these three learning environments will facilitate dissemination of underpinning theory, group-based and student led learning and also the application of this learning within a teaching (practical) environment. The practical sessions will allow students to develop self and peer assessment skills and develop pedagogical awareness in preparation for potential future employment

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.

Formative feedback will be given in relation to both the coursework and practical assessment. This will be developed through peer assessment and verbal feedback given within workshops and practicals.

The essay will allow students to demonstrate understanding of the aims of Physical Education and the importance of developing physical literacy to support learning.

The practical assessment will take the form of a teaching exercise, allowing the student to plan and deliver skill acquisition and development activities within athletic activities.
