PED6012 - Professional Learning and Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Explain how they have taken responsibility for their own professional learning and their continued development into employment;
Justify the decisions made for personal targets and action plans to improve their teaching and continued professional development;
Evaluate their professional knowledge and understanding of theoretical frameworks at the end of training and how this will impact on their continued practice;
Evaluate the impact of their practice on pupil progress over time.

Content:

Students will reflect on their professional and academic progress by reviewing previous targets set in Level 5, including outcomes from all assessment. As they progress through semester 1 of Level 6 they will reflect upon the objectives of the different elements of the taught course with a particular focus on how these will inform their capacity to meet the expectations for the final school based training. With the support of their university Development tutor students will set increasingly challenging developmental targets that will reflect aspirations to achieve the highest outcomes by the end of the programme. Following the school based training, students will evaluate their practice and using the 'Passport to Induction' they will evaluate and update targets for their NQT year.

Development Tutors will support and monitor how students engage in the course, how they manage their time effectively using guided independent study time and taking responsibility for own their continued professional and academic development. Students will engage in a range of directed tasks that include weekly evaluations. Development Tutors will support students in developing reflective practice by reviewing targets and supporting students in seeking additional experiences after their school based training block. Development tutors will also work with trainees in preparing for employment and the job application process, by reviewing personal statement, application forms and discussing possible interview questions. At this level, support for reflection will also be provided by taught sessions exploring professional practices - the content of these will include:

Contextual application of legal responsibilities. Consideration of the role and expectations of the professional, including addressing targets and building on strengths. Ethical dilemmas and conflicting rights and moral positions. Later Years students will also be required to evaluate the opportunities afforded by contemporary technologies in adopting creative pedagogies for the 21st century classroom.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will meet their Development Tutor for 1:1 target setting, and to share their training plans and the Passport to Induction. They will meet in smaller groups to consider the links between the different objectives from the taught course, time management skills, progress towards targets set and their continued professional knowledge. They will have an opportunity to use tutorial time for discussion and guidance on the application process and preparation for interview. Lectures providing an up to date exposition of legal and ethical responsibilities will form part of the provision for this module, providing context for students' reflections and actions and for the setting of directed tasks.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: All directed tasks will be uploaded to an individual e:portfolio. These will include, a development profile, weekly evaluations, a detailed action plan and developmental targets with supporting evaluation of the impact of their practice on pupil progress. The e:portfoilo will also include a summary of key targets to support progression and continued professional learning into the NQT year through the submission of the Passport to induction.

This module is exempt from condonement of marginal failure as a pass is required in order to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of key concepts and ideas around professional practice and pedagogy that are essential in order to demonstrate preparedness for School Based Training and in line with the requirement to meet the Teachers' Standards.
