On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Recognise and interpret national priorities for primary education in the context of SEND and relevant codes of practice and safeguarding procedures;
Assess contextual examples of evidence to demonstrate how pupils with identified needs learn and develop intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally;
Analyse a range of factors that can inhibit pupils' ability to learn and identify factors which enable children to make progress;
Recognise approaches which facilitate learning for all children.
This module will consolidate and further develop knowledge acquired in Level 4, in relation to teaching pupils with a variety of needs and inclusion. Throughout the module students will be required to consider the educational needs of pupils with Special Education Needs, English as a second Language and Gifted and Talented, etc. within the wider context of teaching all pupils effectively.
The module content includes such areas as:
- The roles and responsibilities of the class teacher and all professionals in working with pupils with additional needs.
- The role of the parents and carers and the importance of effective communication, including safeguarding procedures that may emerge from this (appropriate to level of training).
- Promoting participation of pupils in meeting their own needs
- The role of the special school within inclusive education
- Early identification of needs and methods of monitoring and assessing progress of pupils
The design of this module is co-constructed with school partners, particularly those in Special Provision. This includes some direct delivery from partner professionals working in this field.
Taught sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, including input from outside agencies where possible, Throughout the module links will be made to students own experience in school. Learning will also be supported by resources in study packs and the VLE. Students will be required to undertake directed tasks in preparation for sessions. Students will be expected to attend and engage in all off site visits.

Further details relating to assessment
The assignment requires students to engage with statutory curriculum and code of practice documents to evidence their understanding of the approaches to teaching children with SEND. As such, this replicates the experiences of practising teachers.
This module is exempt from condonement of marginal failure as a pass is required in order to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of key concepts and ideas around professional practice and pedagogy that are essential in order to demonstrate preparedness for School Based Training and in line with the requirement to meet the Teacher's Standards.
