PED4452 - Introduction to the Early years Curriculum (3-7) 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate subject and EYFS/primary curriculum knowledge of English, Mathematics, Science/Computing and Physical Education;
Understand progression of pupils' learning in the subjects studied;
Reflect on resources and approaches to teaching and learning, demonstrating understanding of how these may be applied effectively in EYFS and Key Stage 1 contexts;
Produce and appraise, with peers, learning resources appropriate to the age-range studied;
Understand theoretical principles of learning in each of the subject areas studied.

Content:

This introductory module enables students to become familiar with the prime and core areas of Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics in the EYFS Framework (2012) and National Curriculum (2014). Students will also be introduced to science and computing and physical education curriculum areas. The module will introduce students to essential knowledge and understanding of the professional documentation associated with teaching these subject areas in EYFS and KS1. Students will examine key outcomes for pupils in each subject area and evaluate pedagogical approaches and common teaching resources.
A range of models of planning, assessment and organisation of learning in a Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 setting will be demonstrated and explored so that students can begin to make links between theory and practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is taught through a variety of lectures, practical and engaging workshops, creating resource and display opportunities and group presentations, with an emphasis on learning from skilled experienced teachers and our peers.

Students will also attend tutorials and complete a range of directed tasks, some individual and some group, all of which run alongside a focused placement in school.
