MFC4372 - Online Platforms

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Create online informational structures and streams than can be updated and accessed in real time from a range of sources
Choose social platforms based on functionality across browsers and operating systems for the distribution of given media
Create holistic functional online resources from both raw content, and from a live brief
Specify, test and recommend media distribution platforms and channels, discerning between mobile websites, browsers and mobile apps.

Content:

This module explores how different media can be combined on platforms, or presented across channels to create a holistic and coherent online presence.
You will test, adopt, adapt and reject application software for mobile and digital media presentation and access, and learn how to test and prototype quickly and why this is an important skillset for the agile innovation required in industry.
You will learn how to build up from existing resources to create a coherent distributed online presence, and how to take a brief so that we can go from the desired online presence to commissioning the resources.
You will learn how to create websites without coding, including functionality provided by open source community widgets and plugins, and to prototype, test and iterate quickly.
You will use the major current social networks and platforms such Wordpress, Twitter, Pinterest, and Snapchat, and create media for each, reflecting on the publishing process, and creating and using analytics to measure reach.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures and workshops will be utilised to inform and then create online media. Workshops are expected to be both face-to-face and virtual. This module has a strong on formative feedback in the form of private and public comments and updates, and pointers to further directed activities.

Further details relating to assessment
Students will create a public blog around their own interests, which will be used for ten blog-posts as directed tasks throughout the semester.

Directed activities - These consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be on a pass/ fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks successfully completed. A pass mark will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.
