JOU7091 - Professional Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate competence as journalists operating within professional environments.
Demonstrate teamwork in a working environment.

Content:

A placement, or placements, in an industry setting that has a journalism bias. Working alongside, and receiving feedback from, professional journalists. This is usually for six weeks but has a minimum of three weeks, of which a minimum of five working days must be continuous.

Appraisals to be conducted by the host organisation and moderated by University staff.

Hours: 120 hours minimum

Further details relating to assessment
The Employer Appraisal Form requires the host organisation to rate the student on a six-point scale from A (an excellent contribution) to F (a very unsatisfactory contribution). Grades A-D constitute a pass, grades E and F are recorded as fails. This rating is taken into account when lecturers judge the pass/fail assessment of the module.

During the placement, student progress is monitored by the module co-ordinator and, where possible, students are visited in their temporary workplace.

The substance and assessment of this module is influenced by the requirements of the industry accreditation bodies, the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).
