On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify vulnerability and risk across the life course; concepts of safeguarding including protection versus risk management.
Describe developments in policy and practice, recognising the background and development of current and emerging safeguarding approaches and factors that impact on effective practice.
Explain the rationale and practice involved in multi-agency working to safeguard children and vulnerable adults.
Show an understanding of the centrality of the service user and the importance of balancing risk management and promoting individual independence.
Be able to identify and explain levels of risk and how they apply to different contexts, e.g. domestic violence, child protection and vulnerable adults.
Understanding theories of risk and resilience associated with safeguarding across the life course nationally and internationally; recognising human rights, decision making and mental capacity; comparing and contrasting safeguarding children with adult with learning disabilities/mental health needs/addictions/physical disabilities/refugees and homeless people/those with complex needs; abuse categories and the wider policy and practice agendas; multi-agency safeguarding approaches and interventions; barriers to multi-agency working.
This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

Formative assessment activities will be an important part of learning and teaching in this module. The group poster presentations give students the opportunity to work in small groups and increase confidence and skills in giving presentations. The essay allows students to demonstrate depth of knowledge concerning safeguarding policy and practice across the life course. .
