CYP4202 - Policy and Legal Frameworks in Health and Social Care

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Recognise changing health needs within the UK population.
Describe key developments in health and social care policy.
Illustrate the impact of evolving policy on health and social care delivery.
Differentiate key concepts of health and care.

Content:

This module appreciates the dynamic nature of both health and care. It recognises the influence of health and social care policy on the delivery of services. The module also appreciates the link between changing health and care needs and UK policy. With reference to the Health and Social Care Act 2012 there is acknowledgement of increasing diversity in health care delivery and social care provision including greater involvement from the third sector. This module will provide an early introduction to the opportunity for entrepreneurship and creativity within this field. Further chance to revisit the themes of entrepreneurship and creativity are present at Level 6.

Students will study concepts of health and care. They will examine historical and contemporary policy which includes some exploration of the Care Act 2014, Care and Support Statutory Guidance (associated with the Care Act 2014), Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities), Regulations 2014. This knowledge will be utilised in approaches towards service delivery.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials - some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for sessions by reading set texts. There will be a variety of classroom activities. Small group discussion is encouraged and case studies, video and film will be used to facilitate discussion and encourage a problem-solving approach. The module will necessitate engagement with the VLE.

Students will be required to present the themes of their small group discussions to the wider group.

The essay requires both conceptual and policy analysis.

Formative assessment, This module will provide numerous opportunities for formative assessment. There will be informal quizzes and the tutor will be present for feedback presentations on small group discussions.
