CYP3013 - Introduction to Education: Learning and Teaching

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Describe some of the key ways that children and young people learn
Document and reflect upon the differing ways that learning and teaching can be effective
Outline some of the ways that practitioners can promote equality and inclusion
Outline policy and practice in education in the UK

Content:

This module focuses upon the ways that education is provided in the UK. It will allow students to undertake an introductory exploration of the early years, primary, secondary and post-compulsory learning and education phases. Key concepts such as learning, pedagogy, and assessment will be examined. The various ways that effective learning can be promoted will also be explored in the context of equality and inclusion, covering creativity, play, problem-solving and use of technology. Educational policies and frameworks in the UK will also be explored.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will utilise student-centred learning and promote student confidence. Debates and critical reflection will be employed to stimulate student interest. Students will work in groups to develop their understanding of trends and academic theories. Students will undertake problem-solving learning and be involved in formative peer assessment of each others work. Students will also be encouraged to take part in on-line discussion groups. On-line quizzes and resources will be drawn upon to support students' learning. To help students achieve their potential there will also be an emphasise learning as a collaborative process. Students will be encouraged to shape their own learning and to be reflective.

Further details relating to assessment
The reflective report will reflect on their past learning experiences and to suggest how this might have been further enhanced.

Five forum entries will be required on issues related to ways that teachers can promote educational equality and inclusion.

The individual presentation can be negotiated with the tutor and will reflect the student's interests and future career aspirations.
