Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Identify the specific requirements of a variety of sporting activities
Evaluate appropriate awareness of methods of performance testing related to sporting activities
Construct an appropriate strength and conditioning programme based on appropriate training principles
Apply the concept of periodization to training programme design
Demonstrate an understanding of methods of sport specific conditioning

Content:

Athlete assessment; Understanding the demands of sports; Principles of training; Periodization; Recovery strategies; Monitoring and evaluation; Communicating with the athlete and coaches; Training programme design; Specific training methods for strength, power, speed, endurance, muscle mass, and flexibility; Sport specific conditioning.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lead lectures will cover a range of the theoretical aspects related to this module.
Practical sessions will be integral in relation to the technical aspects of strength and conditioning.
