SHN4502 - Health and Fitness

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the components of fitness and how to apply variables of fitness to an exercise programme.
Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological and psychological benefits of exercise on health and health behaviour theory.
Plan, prepare and teach a safe and effective gym-based exercise programme for healthy individuals.
Demonstrate a contemporary knowledge of health and safety issues and contra-indications in relation to exercise and fitness.

Content:

The role of exercise in health. Contemporary lifestyle disease in relation to health. Guidelines for exercise prescription. Principles of training for healthy adults. Motivation for exercise and adherence. Health and Fitness screening. Practical skills in teaching fitness to the community. Planning an effective gym-based exercise programme. The role of health and fitness instructors in the community.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning and teaching methods will take the form of weekly 1.5 hour lectures and 2-hour practical fitness sessions. Assessment will be a gym portfolio and practical assessment. Through workshops, students will develop an understanding of the role of exercise in health and the relationship with disease and motivation and adherence to exercise. The latter workshops will focus on designing and implementing a gym-based exercise including the importance of health screening, informed consent and client safety. Students will design and lead a gym-based session in the practical assessment.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.

For the portfolio, students are required to submit activities related to working with a client, including PAR-Q, a Gym Programme card and four Gym Session plans. Any students taking all these assessments as a deferred opportunity or re-sit will be assessed by a 4,000-word portfolio with 100% weighting.

• The practical component of the module is taught by REPS accredited staff. • Sport lab, gym, sports hall and fitness suite are available for the practical component of the module.
• The practical assessment is 20 minutes per student in relation to REPS accreditation.
