SHN4322 - Secondary Physical Education 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Show knowledge and understanding of skill acquisition within PE and recognise their importance to the learner and teacher.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cognitive development and decision making with the context of games and physical education
Demonstrate comprehension of key principles and curriculum models relating to the delivery of secondary games.
Plan learning opportunities, identifying clear objectives and outcomes.

Content:

The module introduces the underpinning principles of teaching physical education within the context of games. This includes reference to National Curriculum requirements. A particular focus within the module will be effective pedagogy and organisation of the learning environment, which facilitates high quality teaching and learning. The module discusses the theories of skill acquisition and fundamental movement and how this is impacted upon within the learning environment. The application of these skills within a games setting is also focused upon in terms of tactical decision-making and cognitive development. Curriculum models will also be introduced such as TGFU and Sport Education. Students will implement these theories and models within a practical setting and also plan effective learning opportunities for pupils within games.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching methods will include lectures, workshops and practical sessions. The integration of these three learning environments will facilitate dissemination of underpinning theory, group-based and student-led learning and also the application of this learning within a teaching (practical environment). The practical environment in particular allows the students to develop their pedagogy in preparation for future employment.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.
