On successful completion of the module, participants will be able to:
Critically discuss and reflect on their own professional practice in relation to their agreed substantive topic in educational contexts;
Identify and define from the research literature the key theories, ideas, models and frameworks in the substantive topic within educational contexts;
Analyse and judge research findings and other evidence to inform their practice in the substantive topic in educational contexts; (Analysis and Evaluation);
Synthesise research findings to compose a reflective account in relation to the substantive topic that assesses the impact of their learning on professional practice.
Students will:
• Negotiate with the Module Tutor to identify a relevant focus for an independent study related to an aspect of personal/professional/institutional practice;
• Plan appropriate ways of conducting the investigation;
• Identify, and use effectively, appropriate sources of evidence to inform the independent study;
• Interpret a range of sources of evidence to draw justified conclusions in relation to the focus of the independent study;
• Write a reflective practice assignment informs future professional practice as a result of the negotiated, independent study.
Because of the personalised nature of independent studies into professional practice, subject input as part of the moudle will relate to the generic skills and knowledge that are required to conduct such reflective investigations. Input will therefore focus on areas such as:
• Devising and refining proposals for conducting independent studies;
• Identifying and accessing sources of data to inform the study;
• Ethical issues for investigating aspects of professional and organisational practice;
• Models of and approaches to reflecting on, analysing, literature and other sources of evidence;
• Approaches to writing critically about the issues raised in the study.
Learning will include lectures, small group discussions, workshops and seminars as appropriate. Reflective practice will be facilitated in taught sessions and supported by tutorials and online forums on Moodle. Students will be entitled to one tutorial to support the preparation of the reflective practice assignment that forms the summative assessment.
Participants will be expected to draw on their own professional experiences and relevant research in order to contribute to, and lead, group activities.SED7243

Is this module exempt from condonement of marginal failure? Yes
Assessment is through a negotiated reflective practice assignment. The Module Tutor will ensure that the agreed assignment will address the module and programme learning outcomes, and is directly related to professional practice. As such, students will evidence professional practices, and evaluate and reflect upon them within the assignment. It provides opportunities for participants to reflect upon, critique, and investigate research, policy and practice as it impacts on their professional context.
Other relevant matters
It is not expected that students on this module will be engaging in empirical research. As a part of the process of negotiating the focus for the assignment, the Module Tutor may require the student to complete the Leeds Trinity Research Ethics Self-Assessment Form to as a way of checking that an application for ethical clearance is not required, or may require the student to make an ethical clearance application if needed.
