PED5522 - English, Maths and Science with DT

Objectives:

On successful completion of the phase, students will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.
Select a range of primary and secondary sources, including theoretical and research-based evidence, to extend their knowledge and understanding.
Demonstrate their knowledge and understanding to locate and justify a personal position in relation to the subject.
Demonstrate organisation and articulate opinions and arguments in speech and writing using relevant specialist vocabulary.

Content:

This module consolidates students’ subject knowledge and understanding related to English (with particular emphasis on children’s development as writers) and mathematics (data-handling, shape and measure), and establishes students’ subject knowledge in science / DT (investigations, the design and make process). The DT and Mathematics elements will merge for assessment purposes, to explore the use of mathematics throughout the curriculum, the importance of promoting and developing skills and the uses of context in teaching.
Subject knowledge and understanding will underpin students’ capacity to plan and teach units of work, embedding assessments for formative purposes as per relevant national frameworks and structures.

Students will be introduced to some systematic approaches to reflecting on, and evaluating professional practice.
This module will address the following from the Teachers’ Standards effective from 1st September, 2012:

3 Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
4 Planning and teaching well structured lessons
6 Making productive use of assessment

Learning and Teaching Information:

Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis.
