PED4332 - PE, MFL and Geography

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate curriculum and subject knowledge in the areas of Physical Education, Foreign Languages and Geography, and recognise how national priorities influence practices in schools;
Identify barriers to learning in these subjects, including those experienced by pupils and those resulting from school structures and educational policy;
Model and organise effective provision for Physical Education, appropriate to the age group taught, planning for progression in skills;
Recognise the diversity of cultural contexts and use this knowledge to engage pupils in learning.

Content:

Within this module students will be provide with the opportunity to explore a number of foundation subjects to enable them to begin to develop the pedagogical skills and curriculum knowledge to teach Key Stage 2 subjects:
Physical Education:
Students are introduced to the nature of PE, health and bodily awareness. Students are taught various approaches to teaching the subject, appropriate to age, content and stage of physical development. They are taught the implications of using equipment and resources including safety implications for all aspects of study covered. Students learn how to begin lesson and unit planning and monitoring and assessment of pupil performance.
Foreign Languages:
This part of the module will equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver high quality teaching of Foreign Languages in the primary context. They will be supported in developing their personal language skills and understanding of the language and its culture, through the provision of specialist input into a variety of approaches for the delivery of Foreign Languages in the primary classroom.
Geography:
The nature of geography and how this relates to the teaching of primary age pupils and content of the National Curriculum. Students will study approaches to planning for geography in the primary curriculum and the use of formative and summative assessment. Links will be made to other curriculum areas where relevant. Issues of diversity and inclusion will be addressed within the taught sessions.
Analysis of current practices in partner schools informs the setting of priorities for content in this module.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Each session will include a variety of approaches to promote active learning, to reflect those utilised in the primary classroom. These will be undertaken as a whole group, small group, pair or individually. Learning will be supported by reading materials provided in study and core reading and via online learning. Assignments and tasks will be fully scaffolded throughout module delivery to support students in their learning.

Teaching methods will reflect those used in schools, for instance, PE sessions involve taking an active part in physical tasks. Foreign Language teaching involves use of visual media, song and spoken tasks. Pedagogy for teaching geography including fieldwork, use of ICT (to include video, DVD, digital photography), visual and written sources, photo packs, artefacts, role play and visitors

Students are expected to attend all off-site sessions for field work.

This module is exempt from condonement of marginal failure as a pass is required in order to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of key concepts and ideas around professional practice and pedagogy that are essential in order to demonstrate preparedness for School Based Training and in line with the requirement to meet the Teacher's Standards.
