PED4012 - Professional Learning and Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
State how they have taken responsibility for their own professional learning following feedback;
Reflect on their progress to date and identify key actions for their continued professional learning;
Describe how they have managed their own time to respond to and take responsibility for their personal professional and academic targets.

Content:

Trainees will consider pre course targets set, actions taken and the next steps for their own professional learning. They will reflect upon the objectives of the different elements of the taught course and with support from their Development Tutor make links between theory and practice in preparation for their assessed block of school-based training.
Development Tutors will support and monitor how trainees are engaging in the taught course, managing their time effectively using guided independent study time and taking responsibility from their professional and academic progress.
Trainees will engage in a range of directed tasks such as the capabilities audit and weekly evaluations. Learning Mentor will supporting trainees in their developing reflective practice. This includes supporting trainees in seeking additional experiences they may need in school and/or directing them to key texts that support further study and setting targets with the trainee for their continued professional learning.
Support for reflection will also be provided by taught sessions exploring professional practice issues – the content of these will include:
• Planning, teaching and assessment;
• Behaviour management;
• Broad approaches to inclusion and meeting individual needs;
• Safeguarding.
Students will be expected to reflect on the content of these sessions in terms of how they relate to their understanding and performance in other modules on the programme and to their experiences in school, including school-based training.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will meet their Development tutor for 1:1 target setting and action planning. They will meet in smaller tutorial groups to consider the links between the different objectives from the taught course, time management skills, progress towards targets set and their developing knowledge, understanding and skills. Lectures illustrating professional practices will form part of the provision for this module, providing context for students’ reflections and actions and for the setting of directed tasks.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: All directed tasks will be uploaded to an individual e:portfolio. These will include the Competencies and Abilities audit, actions plans, weekly reflective journals and a reflective report that describes how they have responded to targets set and managed their self-study effectively.

This module is exempt from condonement of marginal failure as a pass is required in order to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of key concepts and ideas around professional practice and pedagogy that are essential in order to demonstrate preparedness for School Based Training and in line with the requirement to meet the Teacher's Standards.
