Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Appreciate significant differences in countries in the region
Understand and assess the conditions in countries in Central and Eastern Europe under which a business activity may be established, managed and terminated
Identify and explore various risk factors associated with doing business in countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe
Assess the barriers and potential advantages of direct investment in countries throughout the region
Evaluate and indicate differences in development trends for countries throughout the region

Content:

The module addresses the political, legal, economic, marketing, financial and cultural climate issues related to business decision making in emerging markets. Special emphasis is placed on Central and Eastern Europe. The approach emphasises issues of importance to business leaders and investors regarding similarities in emerging market environments, and, equally importantly, the need to understand differences affecting business activities that exist throughout individual countries of the region. The objective of the module is to provide students with the tools and know-how essential in developing strategic analyses, enabling: a) the analysis of market competition in order to determine if and where the potential for creating a leadership position exists; b) identifying countries most appropriate to the scope of envisioned activities and reflecting advantages such as reduced barriers of entry to establish a market position; c) understanding factors related to risk assessment and steps which can be taken to mitigate risk. The module is directed towards top executives and experienced managers. Graduates will be able to act as consultants in the development and leadership of business activities in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
• Profile and comparison of market conditions related to political, legal, economic, social and cultural influences affecting business;
• Cultural and social factors as they apply to the requirements related to marketing and finance;
• General profile and classification of financial systems in the region;
• Key macroeconomic and political factors governing the performance of financial systems;
• Opportunities and barriers in access to funding for business activities;
• The legal conditions for the creation of a business, the taxation of the entity and termination of business activities;
• Ethical issues of establishing and running business activity in the Region;
• Methods and tools in the process of developing strategic analysis.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The objective of the workshops is to provide students with the possibility of applying the methods and tools in a process of critical analysis of the gathered data, and formulating conclusions that serve as a base for reliable business proposals. Students will be encouraged to develop a critical and reflective approach to the module content. Special attention will be paid to data gathering and team work on problem solving. The workshops include elements of introductory lectures and discussion.

The assignment allows for the assessment of both the students' knowledge and their ability to synthesise and apply this knowledge in novel contexts. Their written communication skills are assessed as well as their ability to formulate logical and coherent arguments.
