Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of the use and operation of a television studio and the studio equipment;
demonstrate an understanding of the different production roles in the TV studio and gallery;
demonstrate an understanding of the creative potential of the TV studio;
develop the practical skills to create a studio-based television programme.

Content:

This module will equip students with the knowledge, skills and practical opportunities to understand the creative potential of the TV studio in creating a wide range of programme genres.
Over the two semesters, students will learn how to make the most of the studio environment and how to operate the equipment, including studio cameras, lighting and sound, autocue and the gallery mixer. They will also see how the various roles within a studio production team work together to create the programme and have the opportunity to take on a variety of production roles both in the studio and in the production gallery. Students will also learn how to operate safely and effectively in the television studio, including an understanding of the importance of risk assessments and health and safety.
This module will include visits to see TV studios in operation.

Further details relating to assessment
The Semester 1 portfolio will normally consist of two studio productions (15-min quiz show and 20-min light entertainment programme).
The Semester 2 portfolio will normally consist of a critical evaluation of the two Semester 1 productions, plus 3 x 20 min magazine programmes.
10% of the mark for each portfolio will be allocated to peer evaluation.
