MFC5062 - Digital Effects

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate the ability to report on and apply technical specifications relating to digital visual effects production
2. critically analyse the role of digital visual effects within the broad context of the web, game, film and TV industries.
3. evaluate strategies for digital post production within the visual effects industry
4. produce motion graphics and effects.

Content:

The module provides a history of special, visual and motion effects production for web, game,film and television from its roots to present day info/entertainment to the move towards digital technologies. It examines the visual use of movement (animation) to effectively communicate static graphical textual information. It also explores issues of technical production, creative possibilities within film, TV, internet and gaiming are discussed together with the constraints of: budget, bandwidth, experience, production time, facilities, location.

Theory will be applied to practical production in semester 2 where experience will be gained using a software packages to create a sequence using motion graphics and/or interactive digital media.

Additional Assessment Information The Portfolios will normally include the interpretation of a News or Story theme into a motion graphics sequence and an evaluative report. The detailed requirements of the Portfolio will be published in the module handbook. Students must complete and submit both forms of assessment to be eligible to pass the module.

Students permitted to take a half-module for the award of 10 credits will be assessed on the basis of a 2000 word equivalent Portfolio.
