MFC4421 - Editing/Post-Production

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate some knowledge and understanding of editing, titling, motion graphics and narrative structure;
Edit a micro short film utilising both production skills and technical awareness;
Demonstrate the ability to work productively as an individual and as a member of a team;
To reflect critically on their knowledge and understanding;
Devise and deliver an oral presentation.

Content:

The module provides a practical understanding of basic video editing utilising a suite of Post Production / non-linear tools. It will provide opportunities for you to develop your post production skills whilst developing your awareness of specialist equipment to be used in the following year. It examines the grammar of Editing; Montage; Cinematic composition and the narrative structure in storytelling. This will be followed by a period of team based production, resulting in an edited 1 x 1minute film (group produced) with content provided by the Camera, Photography & Lighting Module.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module involves a number of set workshop sessions and independent study/work, which will be supported by the module coordinator and module tutors.
Lectures/tutorials/workshops will be based on introducing key post production concepts and techniques whilst developing your existing knowledge with regards to the fundamentals of editing, colour grading and audio mixing.
The module is to be delivered as a one-semester module, as this will provide students with a concentrated environment to habitually familiarize themselves with key production techniques and technical processes and procedures.
Workshops will be capped at 15 students per workshop due to a limitation of resources and space.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.

The Artefact will comprise of a short film produced to relevant specifications (group-produced), designed to test and develop students’ skills in technique and analysis.

The Presentation will assess the student’s creativity, analysis and technical presentation on their group work project and will contain an individually produced critical appraisal of the film.
