MFC4342 - Image Creation

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
demonstrate the ability to manipulate photographic, DTP and web applications;
produce structured practical digital material from a brief, with appropriate application of typography and graphics;
demonstrate a basic understanding of the role of digital imaging in the media industries (Web, Print, Television);
evidence the ability to take photographs, evaluate and analyse their engagement with the audience.

Content:

The module includes an introduction to the terminology of digital imaging, DTP, website and mobile design and an examination of software and hardware used in the industry, with key terms such as resolution, colour depth, layout, typography, interface, structure of HTML and multimedia asset creation and delivery. Montage techniques will be examined with relevance to today’s industry methods.
More advanced forms of image creation will be explored by example and review of contemporary ‘still’ and ‘moving’ images in the design, photographic, advertising and entertainment industries.
Students will practise and apply techniques for the production items, such as photographic and online compositions and multimedia assets in the form of poster; web banner advertising; DTP layout concepts; a web or mobile site containing images, text, animation; 2D printed promotional paper media for P.R. purposes.
The use of practical photography is explored with the taking of still images for reason and purpose towards a brief, together with the manipulation of that media [digital], to gain compositional skills.
The subject explores issues of technical production using a range of weekly directed activities.

other details relating to assessment
The Portfolios will normally include a number of exercises designed to develop technical and analytical skills and familiarise students with resources relevant to the field of study; the detailed requirements of the Portfolio will be published in the module handbook. Students must complete and submit both forms of assessment to be eligible to pass the module.

Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.

Candidates permitted to take a half-module for the award of 10 credits (ECTS: 5) will be assessed on the basis of a 2000 word equivalent portfolio.
