On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
Listen effectively in lecture and seminar situations and demonstrate more fluency and confidence in their spoken English through participation in seminar discussions.
Make accurate and systematic notes in lectures, seminars and when using academic sources.
Summarise academic material, compare viewpoints, develop basic arguments and incorporate information from academic sources into written work in an appropriate way.
Use appropriate IT to produce and give a short oral presentation on a seminar topic.
Understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.
This unit provides the foundation for the development of study skills, with a focus on strategies for listening and speaking.
The unit will help students develop effective listening strategies in lectures and seminars and, building on from this, effective note-taking strategies which can be used in these situations. Students will develop their understanding of the seminar system, with a focus on active participation and preparation. They will also develop and use basic IT skills to support academic work and, specifically, to prepare seminar presentations.
Students will begin to develop an awareness of critical thinking through reflection and evaluation of their own performance and that of their peers.
The unit will help to develop skills needed for analysing information and presenting, developing and supporting an argument in written language.
Finally, the unit will support students in developing an understanding and awareness of plagiarism and how to reference the ideas of others appropriately.
The unit will be taught in a series of interactive workshops, providing a highly supportive environment through which students will develop their academic study skills. As part of this unit, students will also be required to attend specified subject classes.
Formative assessments and feedback will be provided to students during workshop sessions throughout the unit on the basis of home/classroom tasks (individual and group). Formative assessments will help students to prepare for summative assessment at the end of the unit.
